Armin Van Buuren Mirage
Trance Music

Armin van Buuren’s highly anticipated fourth artist album Mirage dropped today, but pre-orders have already brought the album into the US iTunes Top 10 Dance Albums chart. This is the album that dance fans have been waiting for: It’s his most diverse yet, rich with live-recorded instrumentals and featuring collaborations with Ferry Corsten, BT, and Josh Gabriel, along with the talents of Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Nadia Ali, Guy Chambers, Christian Burns and Adam Young of Owl City.

Mirage is filled with musical fusions and surprising interpretations, from the orchestral masterpiece of title track “Mirage”, the deep trance track “I Don’t Own You” and housey “Feels So Good” to the eerie “Take A Moment” and feel-good “Drowning.” These 16 tracks highlight how Armin has matured as an artist. “I wanted to expand myself musically,” Armin says. “My main sound will always be trance, but I’ve been having a lot more fun by doing things differently. For example, I worked with Guy Chambers, the man behind Robbie Williams, and he taught me a lot about songwriting just sitting down with a cup of tea, a guitar and a piece of paper. That really inspired me.”

Armin recently returned to headline the sold-out second night of Electric Zoo, New York’s electronic music festival, playing tracks from Mirage to over 25,000 enthusiastically receptive fans. Jon Pareles from the New York Times, said of his performance: “Mr. van Buuren has become one of the world’s most popular D.J.’s with a particularly triumphal version of trance, infused with the bombast of European classical music: marchlike beats, swelling (synthetic) orchestral chords, arpeggiated melodies and, at times, quasi-operatic chorales.”

This month, Armin launched his Sirius XM Radio takeover with ‘A State of Sundays.’ A State of Sundays is a brand new concept: a weekly 24 hour radio day featuring Armin’s critically acclaimed and award-winning ‘A State of Trance’ radio show, along with an exclusive hour with his personal collection, ranging from trance to progressive, house and down-tempo electronic music. The show will also include a ‘Favorite Future DJ’ segment and special DJ sets by the likes of Markus Schulz, Dash Berlin, John O’Callaghan, Andy Moor, Ashley Wallbridge and W&W.

Armin van Buuren Mirage out September 14th on Ultra Records.

Dimitri from Paris - Get Down With The Philly Sound

Dimitri From Paris – Get Down With The Philly Sound
House Music

Release Date: May 18, 2010

This compilation is the first ever to document the birth of disco in Philadelphia and the work of the unsung musicians who played on the numerous hits that came out from the Philadelphia scene. Featuring platinum selling hits from Melvin & Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, The Trammps and The Jackson 5

BBE Records proudly presents its fifth and arguably most exciting compilation with The French DJ and ambassador of disco – Dimitri from Paris. Get Down With The Philly Sound focuses on Dimitri’s essential disco era tracks, all were made in Philadelphia, and feature the core of the rhythm section that created and defined the sound of the genre. Dimitri’s selection on CD1 traces the evolution of the ’70s disco groove from the first ever disco hit record, to the rejuvenation of the Jackson 5’s career, interspersed with obscurities such as Charles Mann to the magnificent Teddy Pendergrass; Philly International’s answer to Marvin Gaye. CD2 of the compilation pays homage to the original creators and innovators of the remix and extended edits with reworkings exclusively by Dimitri from Paris.

Listen to the Original Harold Melvin & Blue Notes – The Love I Lost:

Undisputedly, Philadelphia gave birth to and defined the brand new Disco genre. Gamble and Huff’s sound evolved from the simpler arrangements of the late 1960s into a style featuring lush strings, thumping basslines and sliding hi-hat rhythms. The anthemic “The Love I Lost” by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in 1973, laid the blueprint for how a disco record should sound. Recording engineer Joe Tarsia founded Sigma Sound in 1968, and virtually of all the disco recordings released on Philadelphia International, Salsoul, Philly World, Gold Mind and Atlantic were made at his studio, thereby maintaining the unique sound of Philadelphia. Located at 212 N. 12th Street in Philadelphia, it was only the second studio in the USA to offer 24-track recording and the first in the country to use console automation. Sigma’s sound was so strong that mainstream acts queued up to record there: David Bowie recorded his Young Americans album there, Dusty Springfield recorded A Brand New Me, while Elton John’s 1977 Philadelphia sessions were in such demand recently that they provided a hit single (‘Are You Ready For Love’) and CD re-issue 3 decades after the recordings were first made.

Nearly all of the disco output from Philadelphia between 1973 and 1980 featured the work of the same studio musicians, known as The Family or MFSB (Mother, Father, Sister, Brother). And of course, these same musicians were also known as The Salsoul Orchestra, Baker/Harris/Young Productions, The John Davis Monster Orchestra or The Montana Sextet (depending on who the recording was for). The classic line up of musicians included Earl Young (Founder of The Trammps and creator of the 4/4 disco drum pattern which laid the template for every dance record since) and Karl Chambers on drums, Norman Harris, Roland Chambers, Bobby Eli and TJ Tindall on guitar, Ronnie Baker and Winnie Wilford on bass, Vince Montana (vibes/arranger and founder of the Salsoul Orchestra) and Larry Washington on percussion and Ron Kersey, Leon Huff and Thom Bell on keyboards. Don Renaldo took care of strings and horns. Tom Moulton (Pioneer of the Disco Mix, the 12 inch vinyl format, the break down sections of records and supplier of missing masters for this compilation) influenced the popularity of the songs with his legendary mixes.

By 1975, Philadelphia International and the Philadelphia soul and disco genres it helped define had largely eclipsed Motown and the Motown Sound in popularity and Gamble and Huff were the premiere producers of soul with nearly 200 gold and platinum records to their credit. Salsoul capitalized on the success of the sound by employing the same musicians whilst focusing predominantly on club music. Notable acts rushed to Philadelphia to capture the sound: Ex Motown cohorts The Jacksons and Eddie Kendricks utilized the above classic line-up of musicians to embrace the new sound and extend their careers.

Now, for the first time ever, Gamble and Huff have given a label access to the multi track tapes of some Philly International platinum selling classics such as “The Love I Lost” and “Bad Luck” featuring the vocals of the late great Teddy Pendergrass, the first black male to release five consecutive platinum albums in the United States. This tribute to the creators of disco is presented on a limited edition double CD, and three deluxe multiple vinyl releases, exclusively featuring Dimitri’s remixes and edits. There will be an additional vinyl double pack containing remixes by Francois Kevorkian, John Morales and Tom Moulton

Bad Rabbits Kick Off US Tour
Electro House Music

As rare as flawless gems, booty with brains and defrosting filet mignon, it is not often that a band breaks out with a powerful sound deserving of an entirely new genre. That is exactly the case, however, with Boston five-piece collective BAD RABBITS and their debut offering, Stick Up Kids EP, where funk-charged bass hold hands with electric falsetto while gripped in a bear hug of energy not heard since early 1980s salad days of hardcore punk.

Dubbed “New Crack Swing,” the wonderfully addictive and truly original Stick Up Kids EP find the BAD RABBITS band cohesively bringing R&B, rock & roll, soul and funk together for an epic house party soundtrack that jams from start to end, without parents, cops or empty keg cups in sight.

chus and ceballos back on tracks

Madrid’s Chus + Ceballos ride the Iberian sound on Back On Tracks
Electro House Music

Release Date: April 20, 2010

2XCD features tracks and remixes from Danny Tenaglia, Steve Lawler, Radio Slave, Umek + much more

Let’s face it, with few exceptions the weather totally sucks right now. So how’s about we offer you a sizzling new mix to get you thinking of the warmer times ahead?! Like a mirage on a foot high snow bank, Chus + Ceballos’ first ever mix compilation from house music authority Nervous Records – Back On Tracks – is a delicious slice of hypnotizing, warm, inviting tribal soundscapes laced with a brilliant use of modern tech elements.

Chus & Ceballos are known throughout the club world as one of the most exciting, dazzling DJ/production duos. With their excellent production works, their coveted remixes, and their marathon DJ sets, they capture the genuine Iberican sound; a perfect marriage of House and Techno whose common factor is the unmistakable beat of the percussion. This sound was originally crafted as an alternative to the dark and brooding prog style that was threatening to rule the scene. Chus & Ceballos vision was, and continues to be a much welcomed breath of fresh air.

1st Track on Chus & Ceballos Back on Tracks: The Heller & Farley Project Ft. Cevin Fisher-We Built This House

The Iberican sound is spread finely throughout the two discs comprising Back On Tracks. Disc one isn’t about building or wasting anytime getting into it. The classic sound of The Heller & Farley Project featuring Cevin Fisher “We Built This House (Fire Island Mix)” greets all who enter the C+C kingdom of house music. Things throb along until the midpoint when techno shades start coloring the sonic frame with tracks including Paul Harris & Alex Tepper “Terris (Original Mix)”, the percussion heavy DJ Wady “Uganda (Robbie Taylor Afrobeat Dub)” and a tribal remix of Steve Lawler’s “Koma Koma” from Radio Slave. The sweaty, rainforest inspired tribal sounds finish out the first disc with tracks from Danny Tenaglia and a pair from Chus & Ceballos
The second disc was composed with just half the number of tracks as the first but it showcases Chus + Ceballos’ ability to ride out the music hard and for a long time. This is your proper peak time foray into the Iberican sound and a disc that would be a perfect accompaniment to Rio’s Carnival. A heavy disco influence coats the thumping bass of DJ Chus presents The Groove Foundation “That Feeling (DJ Chus 2010 Revisited Mix)” while it all shifts a bit tribal techno with Mikel Curcio & JamLimmat “Cha Cha Cha (DJ Chus Muchodrums Mix).” The balance of the disc takes on a more vocal house direction with tracks from Made By Monkeys, Richie Santana & Rob Mirage and Murk’s Oscar G. before Deka & Dave Rose kill it with the aptly titled “Lose Control (DJ Chus Iberican Remix)”
Back On Tracks offers an up front look into a current Chus & Ceballos DJ set. No BS or gimmicks – just amazing house and techno for the clubs…and now just for you, too.
